Avoid These Holiday Disasters At Your Houston Home!
Are you hosting Thanksgiving at your Houston home tomorrow? To help you better prepare for it, you should be aware of the most common disasters that occur when homeowners host a holiday gathering, and how to avoid it happening to you. As your Houston real estate team, we are here to help!
Here’s a list from HouseLogic of common holiday hosting disasters to avoid:
1. Disaster: The oven doesn’t turn on. Without the oven, you’ll be ordering Chinese food or making sandwiches! You need the oven to cook your turkey, ham, etc.
Solution: Don’t self-clean the oven until after the holidays. This can blow a fuse or a thermostat, causing the oven not to heat up, and tracking down a technician on Thanksgiving will be tough!
2. Disaster: The kitchen sink clogs. Don’t think your kitchen sink is invincible during a holiday gathering. The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for plumbers!
Solution: Don’t pour any fats or cooking oils down the drain, as they can solidify in your pipes. Make sure your garbage disposal is working ahead of time, and don’t pour any stringy, fibrous or starchy foods down it. If it clogs, use a snake available for $15 at a local hardware store. Avoid chemical products.
3. Disaster: The toilet gets stuffed. The next thing you know, your whole house smells, and no one knows where to go to the bathroom.
Solution: Don’t flush anything other than sewage and toilet paper. Make sure you have a garbage can right next to the toilet, so it’s convenient for your guests, and feel free to put up a friendly reminder. Also, make sure you have a plunger handy, just in case.
4. Disaster: The fridge isn’t cold. Now your food is going bad before you serve it, or it’s ruining the leftovers, desserts and snacks.
Solution: Get a thermostat for the fridge now, so you can keep track of any temperature changes leading up to Thanksgiving. Make sure the coils on the back or beneath the fridge are free to breathe. Clean the coils of any dust or pet hair that has gotten into them.
